Baitcal Publishing LLC is an independent publishing company devoted to bringing overlooked, underrepresented, and culturally significant stories of American life to a broader reading public. Its growing catalog spans nonfiction, historical fiction, biography, community history, African American history, Latino history, religious history, and historically inspired storytelling. The company’s mission is rooted in a simple idea: some of the most compelling chapters of American history are the stories that have received the least attention. (More)
Before “La Bamba” became a movie, before Ritchie Valens became a legend, he was a Pacoima teenager whose music changed American rock ’n’ roll forever.
Ritchie Valens: The First Latino Rocker presents an intimate biography of the young music pioneer and a thoughtful examination of the musical influences that shaped his remarkable career. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with Valens’ family, friends, teachers, agents, and musical colleagues, Mendheim follows his journey from his teenage years in Pacoima to his rapid rise as one of rock and roll’s most important young artists.
